24 DAILY NEWS – The Sunrise Movement is reaffirming its commitment to climate activism with a congressional endorsement of Saikat Chakrabarti, the former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and a key architect of the Green New Deal.
The youth climate group announced its support to The Intercept as early voting begins in California, just days ahead of the primary election. Chakrabarti will compete against State Sen. Scott Wiener and San Francisco Board of Supervisors member Connie Chan, both fellow Democrats, in a closely watched primary race for California’s 11th Congressional District, succeeding former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“Over the years, the Sunrise Movement has shown the power of strategic organization,” Chakrabarti stated in his communication with The Intercept. “Together with Sunrise, we urged Washington to address the needs of working people when many Democrats—and Republicans—turned a blind eye. We transformed political reality in Washington, and we are prepared to do so again.”
