In the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), local health workers are struggling to combat the epidemic with insufficient supplies and testing materials, amidst a lack of international support. Compounding the crisis is the identification of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which conventional tests often overlook, and for which no vaccines or therapeutics exist. According to WHO, at least 62 fatalities have been reported in Congo and one in Uganda; however, experts caution that these figures likely underrepresent the true toll, given the outbreak’s emergence in a remote, conflict-ridden area.
