24 DAILY NEWS – Hundreds of detainees initiated a hunger and labor strike at Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, over Memorial Day weekend to protest the inhumane conditions at the for-profit immigration detention facility operated by GEO Group. The event drew numerous protesters who voiced support for the detainees’ demands for release and improved conditions, resulting in violent responses from federal, local, and state law enforcement, who used force, tear gas, and made several arrests.
Andrea Sáenz, a former federal appellate immigration judge dismissed by the Trump administration, expressed concern over the lack of quality medical care for detainees, inadequate food supplies, and hostile treatment from guards. “They don’t have enough food to eat. The food that they are getting is spoiled. They’re facing hostility and harassment and violence from the guards,” she noted in a discussion on the conditions affecting a 1,000-bed jail and similar facilities nationwide.
