The latest choreography involves Ethiopia’s renewed aspirations for access to the Red Sea, a move that has ruffled feathers in Asmara and rekindled old tensions.
Ethiopia, landlocked since Eritrea’s independence in 1993, has been vocal about its need for maritime access to bolster its economy. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration has emphasized the strategic importance of ports like Assab, currently under Eritrean control. While Ethiopia insists its intentions are peaceful, Eritrea perceives these ambitions as a veiled threat to its sovereignty.
Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh has dismissed Ethiopia’s maritime desires as “misguided and outdated,” urging the international community to pressure Addis Ababa into respecting Eritrea’s territorial integrity. The Eritrean government has also refuted allegations of military mobilization along the border, labeling such claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
Despite these denials, reports suggest a buildup of military forces on both sides of the border. Observers note that Eritrea has initiated a nationwide military mobilization, while Ethiopia has deployed troops towards the frontier. The specter of conflict looms large, evoking memories of the brutal 1998-2000 border war that claimed tens of thousands of lives.
Complicating matters further is the volatile situation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. A recent coup within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has led to internal divisions and accusations of Eritrean interference. Eritrea’s alleged support for certain TPLF factions has raised eyebrows in Addis Ababa, further straining bilateral relations.
