NEW YORK — Former NFL defensive end and current Good Morning America co-anchor Michael Strahan made broadcasting history this week, officially surpassing Diane Sawyer to become the morning show’s all-time sack leader.

According to GMA’s internal stats department, Strahan notched his record-setting sack during Tuesday’s segment on fall fashion trends, blindsiding a guest stylist mid-discussion and delivering a perfectly timed wrap-up cue. The move brought his career total to 142.5 sacks — narrowly edging Sawyer’s long-standing mark set during her tenure from 1999 to 2009.

From the Gridiron to the Green Room

Producers credit Strahan’s relentless pursuit of interviewees and knack for shutting down awkward conversations as the key to his success.

“When Strahan smells hesitation in a guest’s answer, he pounces,” said one segment producer. “It’s the same instinct he had when chasing down quarterbacks — only now he’s wearing better suits.”

Sawyer Congratulates… Cautiously

Reached for comment, Sawyer offered polite congratulations but reminded Strahan that her record also includes “half a dozen strip-sacks on celebrity chefs” and “two safeties against Regis Philbin.”

Next Up: Career Sack Record for All of Morning Television

With the GMA title secured, Strahan now sets his sights on the overall morning television sack record, currently held by Today show legend Matt Lauer (pre-scandal).

“I’m just here to do my job,” Strahan told 24 DAILY NEWS. “If that means sacking meteorologists or blitzing the cooking segment, so be it.”
