24 DAILY NEWS – Social media giant Reddit has been summoned to appear before a grand jury in Washington, D.C., in connection with a federal initiative aimed at identifying anonymous critics of the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
According to a subpoena obtained by *The Intercept*, Reddit is required to submit a variety of personal data regarding one of its users by April 14. This follows more than a month of unsuccessful attempts by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to establish the user’s identity. Legal representatives for the user argue that anonymity and expression online are protected by the First Amendment. They assert that ICE’s grand jury summons represents a worrying escalation after past investigations into political speech were dismissed by courts. The subpoena originated from federal prosecutors after a similar request was rejected in a Northern California federal court.
