24 DAILY NEWS – The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), a significant facet of the Civil Rights Act of 1965 and the federal agency responsible for safeguarding American workers from employment discrimination, has filed a lawsuit against the New York Times on behalf of a white man who alleges that he faced discrimination based on his race and sex.
The lawsuit is notably signed by not only the EEOC’s acting general counsel and deputy general counsel but also by Benjamin North, who was recently appointed as assistant general counsel. North, previously suspended as a college student over a rape allegation—claims he alleges violated his civil rights—has consistently denied the charges and has worked to argue that Title IX, which prohibits gender discrimination in federally funded institutions, has been misapplied against men.
Chai Feldblum, a former EEOC chair, suggested that North’s signature on the lawsuit may indicate his authorship. EEOC spokesperson Victor Chen directed inquiries about North’s role to the complaint itself.
