24 DAILY NEWS – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is actively seeking to secure a parking lot in Lower Manhattan, aiming to lease up to 150 parking spaces near its Varick Street field office in Hudson Square.
According to a procurement document released on April 16, ICE is inviting proposals from interested parties for exclusive indoor parking facilities. This move has raised concerns among immigrant advocates, including Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition. Awawdeh encouraged garage owners to resist the allure of financial gain that may come at the expense of immigrant communities.
“The Trump administration continues to expand its war on immigrants, and it is imperative that private parking facilities do not align themselves with immigration enforcement,” Awawdeh stated. “New Yorkers are outraged by the ongoing situation, and we must ensure that we are not complicit.”
