24 DAILY NEWS – Guards at a New Jersey immigrant detention center are reportedly retaliating against detainees following nonviolent protests regarding poor conditions, including a hunger strike and a labor strike, as conveyed by relatives and members of Congress.

Staff at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Delaney Hall Detention Facility, a Newark immigration jail operated by GEO Group, are alleged to have responded violently to the protests. According to advocates and detainee relatives, tactics employed include the use of pepper spray and batons against detainees, transferring protest leaders to different facilities, and suspending family visitation rights.
One relative, who spoke anonymously, reported that her nephew indicated negotiations were expected between the guards and striking detainees, but instead, guards reacted with aggression. “My nephew can’t see right now because he was hit on the head with a baton,” she stated.
