24 DAILY NEWS – Far-right Republicans in the House, including many members of the Freedom Caucus, have revealed the conditions for their support of a contentious surveillance law: a ban on any potential future U.S. government digital currency. This week, twenty Republicans who previously opposed a procedural vote reversed their stance to facilitate a vote on a three-year extension of a law permitting government access to Americans’ communications without a warrant.
Not all Republicans voted in favor of the final bill, which passed with a tally of 235–191, but their initial support was pivotal for House Speaker Mike Johnson during the procedural vote. The legislation received backing from numerous Democrats, including prominent supporter Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., who addressed the House floor in favor of the bill despite its controversial stance on central bank digital currency.

However, the House version that incorporates the digital currency ban faces bleak prospects in the Senate. Johnson’s strategy could result in the Senate having the ultimate authority on surveillance
