24 DAILY NEWS – More than a year after Kilmar Abrego Garcia won a pivotal ruling at the U.S. Supreme Court, compelling the Trump administration to repatriate him from El Salvador, federal officials remain indecisive about his future.
### Deportation Controversy
On one hand, officials from the Trump administration insist that Abrego must be deported to Liberia. Conversely, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is advancing its prosecution against him for human smuggling—a criminal case that must be resolved before any deportation can take place.
“You can’t have it both ways,” stated Maryland District Judge Paula Xinis, who initially ordered Abrego’s return and is overseeing his immigration case. “He physically needs to be in this country to be prosecuted.”
The criminal charges against Abrego trace back to a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee, which federal prosecutors claim provides evidence of his involvement in human smuggling activities. The case was slated for trial in Nashville this year;
