24 DAILY NEWS – In a significant escalation of efforts to restrict trans healthcare, the Trump administration issued its first known criminal subpoenas to hospitals providing gender-affirming care for young transgender individuals. Recently, New York University Langone received a grand jury subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Texas, demanding records related to adolescents who participated in the hospital’s now-closed trans youth health program, along with details about the medical staff involved.
Adhering to New York state shield law, the hospital issued a public notice to inform affected patients, stating that “several” other institutions received similar subpoenas. These documents request “information pertaining to patients under the age of 18 who received gender-affirming care” from 2020 to 2026.
Previous attempts to obtain confidential patient information through administrative subpoenas have typically been dismissed by courts as unconstitutional intrusions on privacy. However, this Langone subpoena marks a shift, indicating a federal criminal investigation into healthcare providers
