24 DAILY NEWS – The U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decision has intensified the ongoing battle over voting rights, significantly undermining the Voting Rights Act. The court’s ruling invalidated a Louisiana congressional map that included a second majority-Black district, introducing new challenges to the redistricting process amidst the upcoming midterm primary elections. The ruling stipulates that proof of intentional racism is necessary to claim discrimination in redistricting, complicating efforts to confront racial gerrymandering.
This 6-3 decision, rendered along partisan lines, led Louisiana to halt its congressional primary elections, nullifying previously cast ballots. In Alabama, GOP Governor Kay Ivey initiated efforts to manipulate district maps ahead of the November elections. Meanwhile, Tennessee’s Republican leadership convened a special session aimed at dismantling the last Democratic stronghold in the state, a district encompassing Memphis.
